Tree Canada — Offset Mode

Internet use is surging. And so is its environmental impact. Because the more data we transfer, the more electricity we consume — creating a carbon footprint larger than the entire airline industry, and growing. So, we created Offset Mode — a tool that calculates and offsets your digital carbon footprint in real-time.

How it Works

Offset Mode starts by monitoring a user’s download and upload volume to determine how much electricity they’re using. Then, using their location and regional electric grid data, Offset Mode determines the energy source providing their electricity — and the exact donation it would require to offset it. For example, how much does it cost to offset the impact of streaming a 3GB movie? It depends where you are. In South Africa, where electricity mostly comes from coal-fired plants, it costs about 15 cents, whereas in Switzerland — where hydroelectric and nuclear energy are the norm — it costs only a third of one cent.

Case Study & Results

Installed on 6 continents, Offset Mode had already offset over 12,000 kg of CO2 just two months after launch and had received earned media from both industry and mainstream press outlets.
